Buteyko Breathing

Did you know that the way we breathe can significantly influence how our face develops? For children, especially, breathing habits can make a lasting impact on jaw growth, teeth alignment, and overall craniofacial structure.

When we breathe through our nose, the tongue naturally rests against the roof of the mouth. This tongue posture plays a critical role in shaping the jaws and supporting proper facial growth. The pressure exerted by the tongue during swallowing – up to 500g per swallow, repeated 2,000 times a day – helps expand the upper jaw, creating a broad, U-shaped structure that houses all the teeth comfortably.

But when children habitually breathe through their mouths:

• The tongue drops to the floor of the mouth, failing to guide proper jaw growth.
• The upper jaw develops into a narrow, V-shape.
• This leads to a longer face, crowded teeth, and even reduced airway size.

Nasal breathing is key to ensuring healthy lungs, brain, heart and craniofacial growth. It starts with breathing and it starts when we first take our first breathe as an infant. Continuous nasal breathing can only be achieved if our tongue, cheeks, nose, throat and facial bones work in harmony. Every breathe is oxygen to the brain and on a growing and developing child that is key.

The developmental challenges of a child can often be addressed or even prevented by encouraging proper nasal breathing early on. Simple proven and science-based techniques like the Buteyko Breathing Method promote healthy breathing habits, improving airway function and supporting natural growth.
